Cop Shows

Between the Law & Order series, and the CSI series, you can catch a cop drama every night of the week. And you know how TV execs LOVE copy cat shows, so this season we got two new ones with a twist. In the Mentalist, Simon Baker plays a mentalist who helps the California Bureau of Investigations (which BTW is fictional). He reads people and pays attention to detail to help solve crimes. It doesn’t focus much on forensics as say, CSI, but it shows how he interacts with the suspects and witnesses to discover the truth. What makes the show stand out is, well, Simon Baker. Not just because he’s pretty, but the character has a sensitivity and a quirkiness that makes him likeable and interesting. The Mentalist runs on Tuesdays at 9PM on CBS.

The other cop show is Life on Mars, which is an adaptation of the British show of the same name. In this one, the main character gets hit by a car and then ends up in 1973. That plotline has the potential for hokiness, right? The show does a good job of making the viewer wonder why he’s really there. Although, I’m not always sold on the acting of the main character, the best part of the show is seeing how our society has changed. Because it is easy to forget. Also, he’s looking at the world based on how we see it now, as far as police procedures, laws and equality. And then of course, there is Lisa Bonet. But she’s hardly there, I don’t want to get your hopes up.
