Food is Art

As you know, if I had to choose, the original Top Chef is my favorite in the Top Chef franchise. But last night’s finale of Top Chef Masters (don’t worry, I’m not going to give away the winner), is where this show takes the cake. As masters in the game, the chefs had to create three courses that reflect their food journey. The amateurs could do something similar, but the food is different when the prize presents an opportunity to skyrocket one’s career, as opposed to a feather in the cap of one who is already ‘a master’.

What touched me about the show was the idea that this food is a creative expression of who they are. Therefore, art. Not only is food love, but it is personal, political, intimate. So much more than simply what we put in our bodies to keep from falling out. Even though there are three men with varied backgrounds their common language is food. Susur doesn’t know who the Simpsons are, Marcus doesn’t get tailgating, but they all share who they are through food.

How cool is that?
