Mad Men Lesson 1: The Difference Between Marketing and PR

I was tickled to death when I found that the season 4 premiere of Mad Men was up on the website. I was even more tickled when they showed the difference between marketing and public relations. As a marketing major with a degree, I’m often perturbed when marketing is portrayed as something you can walk off the street and just do. It’s not just sales (which takes a particular skill set), it’s not just about telling people about a product or service. It is a dedicated strategy to increase profit. Companies fail at it miserably every day.

The major difference between marketing and PR is that marketing is paid – i.e. hiring models, photographer, purchasing ad space – and that publicity is not – coverage in a newspaper. Of course the lines get murky, especially in this day and age of social media, if you are looking for a more specific and detailed discussion, you can find it here. Without a strategy, Don got nothing out of his interview with Advertising Age, right? But for his second interview, his strategy was to get clients by boasting about the agency.
