Bringing Your Balls to the Finale

This weeked, I watched two cooking competition season finales: Top Chef and Masterchef. Finalists in these cooking competitions are always faced with the same conundrum: go hard, or be safe.

On Top Chef, Ed decided to leave his dessert up to his sous chef, season 2 winner Elan. Ed told the judges he was afraid he’d mess up the dessert. This is where I insert the blank stare because I’ve seen enough Top Chef to know that you bring a dessert to the finale. With time to prepare between the final competition and the finale, there is really no excuse why ALL contestants can’t go home and perfect one really kick-ass dessert. Had Ed done that, he wouldn’t have chickened out at the last minute. As someone who loves to cook, and bake, I’ve never really understood why the chefs freak out at dessert anyway.

On Masterchef, however both finalists Whitney and Dave went hard on their dishes – Whitney went with a no-bake cheesecake, while Dave cooked his veal in the oven.

Throughout both competitions, the judges question the risks that the contestants make. Some fumble and go home, while others impress the judges and the audiences. Although I am a huge fan of calculated risk taking when others do it, I understand the urge to go with what you know for the final competition. Ironically, I’m chicken shit in real life, so I don’t know what I’d do if I made it to the final competition of either show.

Which would you do, do what you’ve been doing so well, or try something new in the most important part of the competition?
